UK manufacturing workers ‘feeling guilty’ about taking time off when unwell

Just a third of manufacturing professionals admit that they have pulled a ‘sickie’ in the last year – the lowest of any sector in the UK – according to CV-Library.

The independent job board found that nearly six in 10 feel guilty about taking time off.

More than 45% of manufacturing professionals said they feel guilty calling in sick as they leave their team in the lurch, while a further 20% felt taking sick days reflected badly on them, and 16.7% believe it is frowned upon.

Despite their concerns, three quarters said their manager understands when they need to take a sick day.

Lee Biggins, founder and managing director of CV-Library, said: “Sick leave continues to be a taboo topic in the workplace and it’s clear that manufacturing professionals are feeling guilty about taking time off work when they’re unwell.”

Additional findings found they only 7% of manufacturing workers admitted to taking sick days when they weren’t really sick, and 14.3% revealed that they’ve made up an excuse for not going to work.

“It’s positive to see many workers in the sector aren’t pulling ‘sickies’, though it’s clear some are still take unnecessary sick days,” Biggins added. “While it might seem like a good idea at the time you should always consider how your decisions can have a wider impact on your team and workload.”
