Diesel fume advice for forklift truck users

Following the World Health Organisation's announcement earlier this month linking diesel fumes with lung cancer, the Fork Lift Truck Association (FLTA) has responded with guidance on safe use of diesel forklift trucks.

The FLTA is urging those who use and maintain forklift trucks to take action following the WHO study. The WHO classified diesel fumes as carcinogenic after looking at workers in high-risk environments, but the organisation also recommended that everyone should try to reduce their exposure to the fumes.

FLTA chief executive David Ellison said: "With so much press coverage about the harmful effects of diesel fumes, some forklift truck users have expressed concerns about the safety of their forklift truck operations.

"Fumes are associated with a number of fuel types, which is why we have created a free and straightforward fact sheet on this subject. Those who use and maintain forklift trucks will need a sound risk assessment and practical solutions to deal with any fumes which may contaminate their workplace."

The free fact sheet is available from the FLTA website (link below).
