BCS welcomes government’s greening progress report

BCS, The chartered institute for IT, has welcomed the first progress report on the government's adoption of greener ICT practices, which reveals savings of £1.3m in the last 12 months from Green ICT Workbook practices.

"This report shows that, by taking a considered approach and using technology to effect changes, organisations can make significant savings, not only on emissions but also to the bottom line" comments David Clarke, chief exec of the Institute.

"However, there is still obviously more that the government and many other organisations can do, in particular in relation to improving energy efficiency in data centres."

Clarke emphasises the institute's range of initiatives aimed at cutting carbon emissions and reducing the environmental impact of IT—through knowledge and best practices.

He believes that in the UK, legislation is pushing green IT up the boardroom agenda, citing, for example, the CRC energy efficiency scheme, which will affect 2,770 UK organisations – making it mandatory for them to understand and report their energy consumption, with financial penalties for failure to comply.
