“Great decisions and how they were made” is the descriptive subtitle of the book, “Profiles in audacity” by Alan Axelrod.
History can tell us much, and the book investigates historical decisions and examines the resonance in today’s world. Profiles of key figures are used throughout, and include Bill Gates, John F. Kennedy, Galileo and Boris Yeltsin. The introduction covers Caesar’s decision to cross the Rubicon River in 49 B.C. and how this decision brought about massive change in the Roman Empire.
The book goes on to explore how other great decisions were made. Historian Axelrod pinpoints and investigates the make-or-break event in the lives and careers of some of history’s most significant figures. These include Queen Boudicca’s decision to resist; Columbus’s decision to journey to the edge and beyond; right through to Truman’s decision to drop the A-bomb and end WW II, and the decisions made on the ill-fated Flight 93 in the US on September 11 2001.
The book covers decisions made in differing circumstances, from those made in crisis to those made with conscience, or hope, in mind. Decisions made to risk everything are covered, and those decisions to venture – hence the Columbus profile.
Axelrod is a prolific author of over 60 books on subjects covering history, business, and management, including the bestsellers ‘Elizabeth I, CEO’ and ‘Patton on leadership’.
‘Profiles in audacity’ is published by Sterling Books and is available for £14.99
