Sunny outlook for UK Young Engineer of the Year

Months of trialling and testing an idea for a solar-powered bike has won Shawn Brown the title of UK Young Engineer of the year. He was one of a dozen overall prize-winners across a range of different categories and age groups who, on Friday (12 March), presented their projects as finalists in this year's annual National Science & Engineering Competition at The Big Bang in Manchester.Shawn (pictured extreme left) was honoured for his Solar Bike – a bamboo framed electric trike using as much sustainable and reusable material as possible. Shawn attends Ysgol Gyfun Llanbedr Pont Steffan in Lampeter, Wales.
Business Secretary Lord Mandelson presented winners with certificates and cash prizes of £2,000.
Lord Mandelson said: "The winners of the National Science & Engineering Competition are living, breathing proof that science and engineering in the UK is at the heart of a strong and thriving Britain over the coming decades."
Roland Jackson, chief executive of the British Science Association, commented: "There were such an array of projects this year – from the urban chicken hut, the wind-powered i-pod, to the 'drive me round the bend, safely' electronic device - that we didn't envy the judges their task. However, we hope that everyone who took part got something out of the experience and won't hesitate to take part next year, starting with the next round of Regional Fairs across the UK this summer. "
