Smiths is on target 01/08/2008

Strong growth in its detection and engineering divisions has boosted performance by Smiths Group plc.

In a trading update yesterday (31 July) the group said annual profits were anticipated to be in line with management expectations, reflecting strong growth in Smiths Detection and Specialty Engineering. Smiths Medical is expected to deliver results at a similar level to last year.

In recent trading, Smiths’ John Crane engineering operation had experienced particularly strong growth reflecting demand from the petrochemical sector, while the Detection's division, which specialises in airport x-ray machines, saw its rate of growth ease slightly against earlier expectations as a result of certain contract tenders having been delayed into the next financial year.
