Blue passivation coating protects chains March 2008

Rexnord’s zinc passivation and acid resistant coatings now have a new blue lustre, replacing the former yellow chromate one to comply with new legal requirements introduced to eliminate carcinogenic coatings.

As before, this new blue zinc coating is offered by Rexnord as an option on all its chains and associated attachments.

Zinc coatings are just one of the many options available for Rexnord’s chains. As well as a range of different materials - including stainless steel, carbon steel and plastic – there is a wide choice of lubricants to match applications from hygienic food environments through to harsh industrial duties, plus low- and maintenance-free characteristics.

Chromate coatings with carcinogenic hexavalent have now been ‘outlawed’ for many industries, including the automotive industry where it has been banned since July 1, 2007.

Zinc coatings are applied to give protection against rust and acid attack. They are applied by immersing product in a solution of chromatic acid and various other additives. During this process a thin passivating chemical coating is deposited. No electrical charge is applied.
