Landfill regulations and identity fraud risks 28/11/2007

The British Security Industry Association is warning businesses that they should be gearing up for the new landfill regulations. Since 30th October 2007, businesses are obliged to minimise the amount of waste that they send to landfill. As such, they are being advised to review their waste management processes.

Anthony Pearlgood, BSIA information destruction section chairman, says: “The Landfill Directive aims to encourage businesses to undertake alternative methods of waste disposal such as recycling. However, if businesses are just throwing their paper waste containing confidential data directly into the recycling bin without being clear about how it is being processed, they run the risk of becoming a victim of identity fraud.”

“The Association advises engaging the services of a BSIA information destruction company which will not only shred your confidential data, but will also ensure that any shredded material that can be is recycled. This means that businesses can protect themselves from identity theft, fulfil their requirements under the Data Protection Act, and also comply with the new landfill regulations.”

BSIA information destruction companies will shred all your confidential material including paper records, CDs and DVDs, computer hard drives and company uniforms. All BSIA information destruction section members must hold ISO 9001:2000 accreditation, comply with a code of ethics, and will be inspected to BS 8470, the British Standard for the destruction of confidential material, as part of their ISO accreditation audit procedure.
