A new book that will appeal to all those with an interest in British heritage, craftsmanship and tradition – and to those who want to buy British to reduce their carbon footprint
Some things are just plain British through and through but tales of factories moving abroad and with Britain importing so many goods, are any of the great British icons actually still made in Britain? Author James Fielding is glad to report that they are – along with lots of other products too.
Fielding has researched 80 British firms for this new book. Some of the companies he has chosen to feature are household names, others are less well known. Some firms were established centuries ago (the oldest dates back to 1689) while others have only been in business for only a few years (the newest was set up in 2002). Some of the manufacturers profiled in the book employ thousands of staff while others employ less than five. But all of the companies in the book have one thing in common: they are 100% British.
The companies featured in Made in Britain produce a wide range of goods: foods, drinks, clothes, shoes, cars, toiletries, motorbikes, skateboards, corsets, brushes, musical instruments, sports equipment, tools, locks, clocks, lava lamps as well as Marmite, black cabs, brollies – and, yes, even tea (from Cornwall)!
The book provides potted histories and photographs from each company plus interesting facts. With global brands on the up and up, Made in Britain shows us that it is still possible to buy British. This is book will delight, surprise, inform and entertain.
The book contains no advertising, and inclusion was in no way financed by the companies featured. The choice of companies was purely an editorial decision based on the information available at the time of research.
The author James Fielding would like to know of other Great British companies making products in Britain. He can be contacted via the publisher.
Made in Britain is published by Summersdale. It is available for £9.99 through all good bookshops and internet booksellers or by telephoning mail order at Summersdale on 01243 771107.
