Take the sludge out of zinc phosphate paint spraying October 2007

Downtime and maintenance costs associated with sludge formation in zinc phosphate-based paints are greatly reduced by the installation of Magstream magnetic fluid conditioners from Fluid Dynamics International.

Magstream will also minimise problems with clogged spray nozzles and reduced flow rates due to encrusting in pipes – and the consistency of phosphate coating is improved.

Magstream’s effectiveness has been proven in paint spraying plants for over 20 years, with companies such as Jaguar, Hoover, Servis and Massey & Ferguson, Sanyo, Brother and General Motors. Unlike other fluid conditioners, it uses an array of powerful raw earth magnets encased in stainless steel tube and orientated to optimise polarity. This has the effect of aligning the paint molecules and reducing sludge formation, as well as ensuring a smoother flow of paint through the system.

The financial savings from installing Magstream can be very significant. In the case of one major car manufacturer, sludge formation and disposal was reduced by 75%, while the frequency of cleaning necessary for the spraying system was extended from 6 weeks to 12 weeks. Pipework no longer needed caustic cleaning to remove sludge encrustations and the electrical consumption of pumps was reduced accordingly. The resulting efficiency improvements in heat exchangers also enabled more precise control of phosphate temperature.

Fluid Dynamics International, the manufacturer of Magstream, has been manufacturing non- chemical treatment systems for the prevention of scaling in process lines and heat exchange equipment for more than 30 years.
