Key component for Multipart October 2007

One of the world’s leading automotive parts and components logistics specialists has invested in state of the art stretchwrapping equipment from Herefordshire-based Orion Packaging Systems (UK), to boost throughput and create cost savings at its new Lancashire premises.

Multipart Supply Chain Solutions, formerly known as Lex Auto Logistics, despatches vehicle parts to dealers and fleet operations across the world on behalf of companies such as Isuzu, Hyundai, Dennis Eagle and LDV.

Late last year the company took the decision to move to new purpose built premises in Chorley from its previous site locally where it had been based for more than 100 years. That move entailed moving inventory worth more than £12 million from the old site to the new without disruption to normal service – some 1,000 trailer loads over 4 months.

Multipart had previously been either stretchwrapping palletised loads before despatch using an older static machine, or hand wrapping them, but were keen to invest in new, faster and more mobile equipment which could be used at a variety of locations in the new facility. Equally important, the machine would help speed up the packing of material for the transfer to the new site.

Of particular importance was the ability of any new machine to be able to run off a standard single-phase (three-pin) electrical supply.

Brendan Leach, head of business solutions at Multipart, says: “We are wrapping and despatching mixed loads of parts every day and they need to be secure as they are often travelling long distances and we can’t risk a damaged or lost load due to the cost involved.

“Increased throughput meant that we had had to start wrapping some loads by hand but this does not create consistent pack presentation and does not make optimal use of film.

“Orion understood our needs and were able to provide a product that is easily manoeuvrable to the different areas within the warehouse where it is needed and doesn’t need a three-phase power feed.

“The HP500 machine is semi-automatic but very easy to use for our staff. It is purpose built for us but is made up of standard modules. It wraps all of our loads quickly and effectively, and has created significant savings on wrapping film as well as saving time as we no longer need to hand-wrap at all.”

Orion also provides Multipart with training, servicing and routine maintenance by its own in-house engineers.
